Inspirations: Feeling Posh.

Dress from J Crew, Lace Bolero from H&M, Headband from Forever 21, Shoes by Seychelles, Bag from Nine West.

A slightly costume-y look I can only really put together in daydreams since I fear such shoes and clutches are not very versatile. I’ve seen that lace bolero at H&M a few times, and find it quite tempting. This is despite the fact that I don’t really have much use for it since it’d look a little wonky on anything other than a dress? And I don’t wear dresses that much.

Halloween Themed: Charlotte Charles.

Posted in inspirations by bluewellesleyblue on October 27, 2008

Pushing Daisies is one of my favorite recently released shows, currently in its second season on ABC. It’s quirky, fun, and tinged with both colorful sweetness and a fair bit of dark humor. It’s very stylized, and I absolutely adore both of the romantic leads: the Piemaker played by Lee Pace and the girl named Chuck, played by Anna Friel. I couldn’t find any very good screenshots of Chuck’s many adorable outfits, but there is a certain irresistible, kind of 50s or 60s style to them. She wears a lot of floral dresses and bright, bright colors – in keeping with the art direction of this wonderful show – and one of my potential ideas for this or next Halloween is Chuck. After all, I have half the makings of this outfit already!

I’d start with my Stepford Wife floral dress, with the bright blue flowers. Unfortunately, I’ll probably never obtain that ridiculous ribbon flower belt in bright yellow from J Crew, but I can probably add a bright yellow ribbon of my own as a belt, and figure out how to tie a fancy, flouncy bow. With that done, I’d put on some bright jewel tone shoes, preferably with bows as well and add a skinny headband in a coordinating color. I’d have to do my hair for once, but all of the components are things I could easily reuse on the less costume-y days of the year.

Whoa: Alexander McQueen Fall 2008 RTW.

Posted in inspirations, things i love by bluewellesleyblue on August 25, 2008

While Alexander McQueen’s ready-to-wear runway show for Fall 2008 doesn’t include very much that might translate well into day to day life, it is quite inspiring from a costume design perspective. It reminds me a little bit of some of the costumes in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, namely the ones worn by Padme or Natalie Portman’s character. Some of the white dresses with the shorter, very voluminous skirts also remind me of ballet costumes. This show must have been quite a sight to behold.

Photos via Style.com, where you can find the full size versions. The runway review mentions that McQueen was inspired by, among other things, a trip to India and British couture from the 1950s. I’m not at all familiar with the latter, but when I first saw the collection I thought that much of it reminded me of royalty. This show is definitely quite an artistic achievement.

Inspiration: Uniforms Loosely Constructed.

Another hypothetical outfit, this time entirely drawing from a price point I would readily shop at. By now, it’s probably clear that “Gossip Girl” is the influence from which you cannot escape when it comes to young women’s fashion, and even if the show is too melodramatic for me, the characters are remarkably attractive and well-dressed. I could never translate some of the things the queen bees of Gossip Girl wear into real life – the bright pumps and lacy white bobby socks, for example – but I can rock the argyle, the plaid, the headbands, and the bows with the best of them.

Inspiration: Circus Animals.

Posted in inspirations by bluewellesleyblue on August 3, 2008

Those pink and white frosted circus animals are one of my favorite cookies. Everyone has one of those highly processed snacks from childhood that they can’t help but love, unhealthy trans and saturated fats or no. Here’s a hypothetical outfit vaguely inspired by cookies: the bright pink, the white and confetti-like patterned top, and the elephant necklace are all reminiscent of cookies.
