One Thing Primark Does Right.

Shopping at Primark is something many Londoners and tourists indulge in, which quickly becomes clear when you walk down and around Oxford Street and see just how many of those plain, flimsy paper bags are around. After all, with 4 GBP bras and 6 GBP jeans and so on so forth, the price is definitely right even if the fit tends not to be. I ate lunch with a friend from Wellesley who is also studying in London and then we popped into Primark since it was still a weekday afternoon, and she introduced me to the joys of Primark lingerie. Admittedly, they carry more than their share of brightly colored and strangely ruched and embellished bras, corsets, and so forth, but sometimes, you just want to buy some campy lingerie for costume purposes.

They carry a fairly limited range of sizes – none in my actual bra size here though I approximated alright by going up a band size and down a cup size – and you’re not actually allowed to try on their bras in the fitting rooms apparently, but it all fits pretty true to size. The nightgowns and non cup-sized corsets are probably a little awkward for… less average sizes, but if the shoe fits, you can’t deny that 6 pounds for a corset (less than 12 dollars) is wonderful.

Those New Yorkers are so Lucky…

Posted in miscellaneous by bluewellesleyblue on September 11, 2008

Of course, they have fashion week, but with that also comes things that are more accessible to the more average consumer. Fabsugar was able to get to one of the limited-time-only Target temporary stores in Manhattan, and they were able to get their hands on some of the upcoming designer for Target collections. The rest of us won’t be seeing these things until early and mid October.

I’m not too excited about the Jonathan Saunders Go International collection – it’s nice and colorful, but not my style – but the Anya Hindmarch for Target and Siegerson Morrison for Target shoes look to be some of the best designer for Target stuff yet! Once again, Fabsugar has a pretty complete preview of what those lines will include. I don’t know how those shoes will be on practicality or comfort. One of my friends owns a pair of the Hollywould for Target heels and they end up being very painful. Still, the bags are a pretty safe bet for an affordable and pretty classy design.

Cheap Thrill: Forever 21 Flower Headband.

Forever 21 headband, $3.80.

Though I love being at home, one disadvantage to being in the suburbs is that the shopping options just don’t match up to being within easy reach of a city, even a smaller one like Boston or Providence, where I occasionally go to visit my roommate from last year during short breaks. The Providence Mall Forever 21, for example, is new, shiny, and gigantic while the Forever 21 at home is a bit small, disorganized, and hasn’t been redone since I was in middle school. I’ve been there once or twice since coming home and the clothes have been a bit disappointing. Though I do love to shop there dearly, the comparatively low quality of the clothes there does get highlighted when they try to incorporate prints or patterns like the ubiquitous plaid that seems to be quite in for fall.

The hair accessories, though, don’t disappoint quite as much. I really like this red faux leather flower headband. It looks a bit unwieldy, but the flower is just the right size when the headband is on, and it’s surprisingly understated. It’s also available in black, but I opt for the red since it has better contrast with my black hair.

Cheap Thrill: Forever 21 “Parker” Handbag.

$32.80 at Forever 21

Anytime I see the ribbon-through-chain type of handle first inspired by Chanel, my heart goes pitter-patter. Chanel this is obviously not, but it’s still a fairly classy and subdued-looking bag that would serve very well for an occasional day out on the town. At 11” by 17”, it’s a bit large, but I’m thinking that it would make a fine tote for classes as well. (However, since it is Forever 21 and the materials are of unknown but likely dubious quality, I would also be careful about not putting too much weight in it. Still, it’d be just fine for a notebook or two, a little pencil case, and some other odds and ends!)
